Goodnestone

Unmissable Goodnestone

The countryside around Goodnestone offers plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling and visiting traditional country pubs, exploring parklands, gardens and ancient churches. Whilst staying here, take the time to:

  • One of the Rich Seam pack of walks (number 4), available through the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership, takes you through Goodnestone, Chillenden and Rowling, but on a different route. Following country lanes and footpaths you will go past Goodnestone Park House, Bonnington Farmhouse and through farmland to Rowling where you will then turn back towards Goodnestone. This is a fairly easy walk at 4 miles (7kms) so allow around 2 to 2.5 hours.
  • Visit Goodnestone Park Gardens – a haven of tranquillity created by generations of the Fitzwalter Family with Tea Rooms and the Nursery. Explore the Woodland Garden, the Walled Garden, The Parterre and Terraces which overlook the village cricket green, The Arboretum and Gravel Garden. Check their website for details of various events taking place throughout the year. (2 – 3 hrs).
  • Explore the village, parkland and countryside of Goodnestone. There are two walking routes you can follow: Explore Kent’s Goodnestone Walk which is downloadable from their website, or alternatively a route included in the Rich Seam collection of walks which you can obtain from the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership. (Approx 2.5 hours).
  • Make sure you pass Chillenden Mill on your walk, one of the few open trestle post windmills in Kent and a distinctive local landmark that can be seen for miles around. Viewing is by appointment – ring 01304 841970 to arrange.
  • Visit St. Nicholas at Barfrestone, a delightful little church famous for its wonderful stone carvings around the doors and windows – as well as its bell which hangs in the branches of a yew tree in the church yard. St. Nicholas features in Simon Jenkins book entitled England's Thousand Best Churches.
  • Have lunch / dinner at the Fitzwalter Arms in Goodnestone and the Griffins Head in Chillenden.
