Our History

The Straits of Dover have been both Britain’s frontline and her gateway for thousands of years. This explains why our region has more castles, museums and stately homes than any other coastal region in the UK.

Our castles are particularly impressive. Dover Castle occupies a vast site atop the White Cliffs of Dover, while both Deal and Walmer Castles are the creation of Henry VIII and were built as mighty coastal defences.

Dover’s Roman Painted House offers a glimpse of life more than 2000 years ago while at Dover Museum you can learn about the town’s history and view the award winning Bronze Age Boat Gallery. Deal’s Timeball Tower, with its iron ball that drops every day at exactly 1pm, was once vital for passing ships to set their chronometers and in Sandwich the Guildhall, built during the reign of Elizabeth I, illustrates the town’s history from early medieval times.

Francais Notre histoire
