The Club has hosted many major tournaments, in addition to the
Open Championship, for both Amateur and World famous Professional
golfers.
Dr Laidlaw Purves of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, designed and
established the Club in 1887. The Club was intended to serve
the needs of London golfers who were only able to play their golf
on often crowded and unkempt courses in their area. Named St.
George's, it was to become the English rival to
Scotland's St. Andrew's. King Edward VII bestowed the club
with Royal status in May 1902.
This Links course provides a severe test for even the greatest
of golfers and the fact that only three Open winners, Bill Rogers
in 1981, Greg Norman in 1993 and Ben Curtis in 2003, have managed
to be under par after the 72 holes, speaks for itself.
... Sandwich has a charm that belongs to itself ... The long
strip of turf on the way to the seventh hole, that stretches
between the sand-hills and the sea; a fine Spring day, with the
larks singing as they seem to sing nowhere else; the sun shining on
the waters of Pegwell Bay and lighting the white cliffs in the
distance; this is as nearly my idea of Heaven as is to be attained
on any earthly links.
