48 hours in White Cliffs Country
Day One
Lunch – Take your pick from a wide range of
great places to eat, and enjoy lunch in the lovely seaside village
of St Margaret’s. The village and surrounding countryside are
spectacular, unspoilt and full of history.
Afternoon – Explore Sandwich
One of most ancient and intact historic towns in the country,
Sandwich’s street plan has changed little since the time of
Domesday in 1086.
Start your tour of Sandwich at the 16th Century
Guildhall, which retains original features such as the Court Room
and Jury Box.
A short walk from the town centre, are the Secret Gardens of
Sandwich. Enclosed by ancient city walls, the beautiful gardens
stretch out across 3.5 acres, designed by Edward Lutyens and
Gertrude Jekyll.
Head down to the historic quay and cruise along the River Stour.
The Sandwich River Bus offers a range options and can incorporate
seal spotting, pub lunches and trips to Richborough Roman Fort.

Eat - Follow your
nose and discover one of the many excellent places to eat. From
fresh fish and tapas through to quality pub food, there is
something for everybody’s taste buds.
Day Two
Morning – Discover Dover
History is big on the agenda in Dover. Discover the world’s
oldest sea going boat at Dover Museum. The award winning Bronze Age
Boat Gallery at the districts largest museum has interactive
exhibits and displays. A short walk will take you to The
Roman Painted House, an exceptionally well-preserved Roman Official
Hotel.
Take a break from culture and head towards the seafront and
enjoy some retail therapy. The designer outlet at De Bradelei Wharf
sells top names at low prices in a superb maritime setting.
Lunch –
Fill the gap
From places to eat near the Marina to superb family owned
Italian restaurants, you’ll find a great choice - most serving
excellent quality, locally sourced ingredients.
Afternoon –
Dover Castle and Secret Wartime Tunnels
This spectacular site, above the famous white cliffs is known as
the ‘Key to England’ and boasts over 2000 years of
history.
Visit the Secret Wartime Tunnels and experience life as it was
lived by the 700 personnel based here in the worst days of World
War ll, and relive the drama as a surgeon struggles to save the
life of an injured pilot in the underground hospital.
In the exciting and brand new development at Dover Castle you
can experience the sights, sounds and smells of medieval. Become
part of Henry ll's court as you tour the recreated 12th Century
rooms, and learn about the Great Tower through the voices of
contemporary characters associated with the building.
Evening – Take it easy
If you still have some energy, why not stretch your legs,
breathe in the sea air and stroll along the iconic
White Cliffs of Dover. Enjoy the spectacular views and watch
cross channel ferries and cruise liners come into the port.
Dine in Deal!
Deal has café culture in abundance. The colourful seafront plays
host to a wide choice of excellent pubs and restaurants.
Day Three
Morning – Maritime Deal
Deal is a gem of a seaside town with its own unique character
that has inspired the many artists, writers and musicians who have
made it their home. Once a major port and steeped in maritime
history, the sea still plays an intrinsic part of the town’s life
with bracing walks along the promenade and the award winning
pier.
Wander through the high street towards the north end of the
town. Fantastic small, independent shops and French delicatessen’s
which rival The Brighton Lanes!
Both The Maritime and The Time Ball Tower museum will give the
visitor a taster of Deal’s long and interesting history. Just off
the seafront, you can see one of Henry Vlll’s finest artillery
works in England. Deal Castle offers exciting battlements, dark
passages and a huge basement to explore!
Lunch – Al Fresco
Why not dine al fresco and pick up some deli to eat on the
beach? Alternatively indulge in some freshly cooked fish and chips
and watch the world go by.
