The Cliffs and Castles Route, National Cycle Route 1 - From Dover to Deal
Come by sea or from the west into Dover, and the first thing you see is the magnificent white cliffs. Spend some time savouring Dover's rich maritime history as the Gateway to England.
National Route 1 is well signed. Choose from two routes from the seafront up the hill crowned by Dover Castle: either push your bike up a cliffside path, or ride into the town centre, then up north of the castle. The two routes, both steep, meet up near the Langdon Cliffs.
The Cliffs and Castles Route, National Cycle Route 1 - From Deal to Sandwich
Deal to Sandwich
Take National Route 1 north from Deal Pier along Beach Street, then inland to cross marshlands drained by medieval monks, past golfers and sand dunes under huge Dutch skies. Look out for all the sea birds and rare plants; stop for a picnic on the beach or in the dunes.
Kent Coastal Castles Ride - National Cycle Network: Route 1
Deal to St Margaret's at Cliffe.
Starting at Deal railway station, this route leads you to the seafront. Take a look at nearby Middle Street with its quaint nautical cottages and Georgian houses, the Royal Hotel where Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton stayed, before joining the NCN Route 1. This section of the route is flat - it's part of a long beach promenade. The route leads you past Deal Pier and Deal Castle. Look out for Hut 55 - cycle hire and coffee shop. Continue on the promenade at Walmer to Deal Memorial Bandstand, Walmer Lifeboat Station, the landing place of Julius Caesar and the Roman fleet in 55 BC, Walmer Castle and Gardens to Wellington Parade and the cliffs at Kingsdown. Then the next uphill stretch is along beautiful lanes and open countryside towards pretty St Margaret's Bay.

The Sandwich Way - Regional Route 15
At the Dover end, the route starts near the superstores and Dover Transport Museum - 01304 204612. Just down the hill is Crabble Corn Mill in River , a 200 year old working watermill. Regional Route 15 goes safely under the A2 to Whitfield. There it joins Regional Route 16, a way up from the Docks via the Market Square, turn left at the top of the hill past Dover Castle.
The Miner's Cycle Trail
A new route which explores the beautiful lower slopes of the North Downs between Deal and Shepherdswell, past what remains of old coal mines opened in a twenties rush for 'black gold'. Starts at Sholden on one of the first cycle tracks in the country, alongside the A258. After miners were injured riding their bikes to work in the dark, a Deal cycle racer had a whip-round to build a path separated from the main road.
