We have a growing food and drink scene in White Cliffs Country! Explore quaint and quirky Deal, active and adventurous Dover and relaxed, romantic Sandwich as you follow our food and drink itineraries around this beautiful part of Kent.

Discover our amazing local food and drink producers - with everything from local fish, fresh from little fishing boats dotted along the beach in Deal; through to enjoying a pint (or two!) at one of our many local micro-breweries, some of which are sourced from local hop fields which are popping up across White Cliffs Country.

  • Great Food Experiences

    Fancy yourself as a bit of a foodie? Eating out is an experience in itself – but you could take things one step further and take part in a cookery course here in White Cliffs Country. There is a range of cookery classes and workshops available for all ages and abilities. So, if you’ve always wanted to brush up your knife skills, or bake artisan bread, now’s the time! Or why not embark on a foraging adventure (plus food feast) with The Wild Kitchen? For ‘afters’, head to Solley’s Farm where they produce their own, delicious ice cream and create your own sundae.

    If you’ve worked up a thirst, try your hand at cocktail making or enjoy a tasting tour at a vineyard or brewery. A stone’s throw from Sandwich, you can sample quality English wine at Barnsole Vineyard, whilst in the heart of Dover, Breakwater Brewery has a range of tasting tours in their tap room!

    The cookery school is beautifully situated near the sea in Deal and offers a wide range of cookery courses, exciting dining events featuring world cuisines, team-building corporate events, and private dining for special occasions.

    Barnsole is a boutique vineyard and winery, with the perfect geology and climate to produce the high-quality grapes needed to make their award-winning English wines. One of the oldest vineyards in Kent and a short distance from the Cinque Port town of Sandwich, they offer tastings and a more formal tour with one of their winemakers.

  • Food Heroes 

    We have a fast, growing food and drink offer and what better way to explore White Cliffs Country than through its rich, culinary landscape. On this trail we showcase some of our local ‘food hero’s’, all responsible for their unique innovation and outlook and all, ready to share their products with you.

    Kentish Knockers

    These tasty and award-winning pasties are the brainchild of Deal home cook, Jill Martin, who discovered that despite Kent’s rich coal mining history, it didn’t have a famous pasty! The tongue in cheek name, harks back to the knockers, who were mythical men that lived deep in the mines who protected miners by knocking on the tunnel walls to warn of a collapse. Today you can find these delights at Deal’s Saturday Market and they come in four flavours, named after the Kent mines – The Betteshanger Big Breakfast, The Chislet Chive, The Snowdown Hot Tuna and The Tilmanstone Topper.

    Crabble Corn Mill

    Crabble Corn Mill is a working museum that shows the excellence of Georgian and Victorian engineering at work using the power of water. There are six floors of exhibits and milling machinery that demonstrates the process of turning wheat into flour. The wholemeal flour is available for sale at the mill.

    A fourth-generation fishmonger and game supplier, Jenkins & Son specialise in fresh, local and sustainable produce. Based in Deal High Street, they buy daily from local inshore dayboats who fish off the Kent coast and the South East and have built up their relationships with these suppliers over generations.

  • Fresh from the farm and boat

    There are plenty of markets and farm shops across White Cliffs Country to find locally produced meat, fruit and vegetables. Pick your own fruit, including strawberries, cherries and raspberries, at one of the local farms. Get some freshly caught fish from the fishmongers, enjoy the buzz of a bustling street market or visit one of the many farmers’ markets. You’ll even find a couple of the country pubs also have shops to pick up locally sourced produce!

     

    Little Farthingloe Farm (Dover)

    Farthingloe Farm has a traditional farm shop, with a focus on offering a complete range of fresh food, including a butcher and bakery. Much of the produce is sourced from local farms across Kent. Be sure to try their Kentish gypsy tarts for a sweet taste of the area.

    Recently built, Algar Farm shop has an amazing, wide range of locally sourced produce and alcohol. Their deli is packed with delicious handmade goodies, all made by their in-house chef.

    Wingham Country Market is a family-run farm shop and garden centre that offers local produce with a wide range of organic, gluten-free and special diet foods as well as local free-range Chandler and Dunn Meat. They pride themselves on sourcing produce from local farms wherever possible.

    Whitfield Farmer’s Market

    Whitfield Farmer’s Market is held every Thursday from 08.30am to 12pm in the Village Hall. You will find locally grown veg, free range eggs, freshly baked bread and cakes, quiches and pies. In addition to food, they also have a range of hand-crafted things like Shawls, blankets, hand stitched cards and other gifts.

    Previously voted as one of the best farmers markets in Kent, this weekly market is held every Tuesday from 10am - 12.30pm and sells local produce, including meat, fish, deli items, through to Kentish ale and fruit liqueurs.

    Gibson's Farm Shop is a family-run business that was established in 1970. They believe in providing the best foods that Kent has to offer. They have a bakery, a butcher and a delicatessen alongside the fresh fruit and veg produce and stock cupboard essentials. There is also a café that uses produce from their own farms and the local area to create their menu.

    Deal Markets

    There is a table-top market held in the Undercroft of Deal Town Hall every Wednesday morning, with local people selling all sorts of things including homemade cakes & pastries, bread, cookies, preserves, biscuits, eggs, plants and handmade gifts.

    On a Saturday morning, you will find the lively market, located at the north end of the High Street in the heart of the Georgian Conservation Area. The Deal Saturday Market has been a Chartered Market since 1699.

    Kent’s hop fields have made our local beer famous for hundreds of years and Kentish apples make an excellent cider. If you’ve worked up a thirst from all your sightseeing, why not sample some of the local craft beers, real ales or Kentish cider.
