Rainy Day Activities in White Cliffs Country

Every raincloud has a silver lining

White Cliffs Country is one of the warmest, driest and sunniest places in the UK – but even in Deal, Dover and Sandwich, it does rain sometimes! The great news is, when the weather has taken a turn for the worse, there are plenty of exciting things to see and do, and great places to go and visit on a rainy day in Deal, Dover and Sandwich.

Why not step back in time and discover the fascinating history and heritage that has shaped the story of White Cliffs Country throughout time?

Uncover thousands of years of history at Dover Museum, which is FREE to enter and which chronicles the story of the world-famous historic town of Dover. See the world’s oldest surviving sea-going vessel, Dover’s very own 3000-year-old Bronze Age boat, which was discovered just yards from where it is now on permanent display in the Bronze Age Boat Gallery. View the current exhibitions and pop into White Cliffs Country Visitor Information Centre to meet our friendly team of advisors, to collect free maps and guides to help you explore Deal, Dover and Sandwich, and to browse the gifts and mementos on sale in the Dover Museum shop.

Head to Dover Transport Museum and discover working model railways, hundreds of models, maritime history and many other displays that go beyond just transport. Get a fascinating glimpse of old Dover's streets and a wartime Anderson Shelter; find a restored St Thomas 0-6-0 Saddle Tank Engine from Snowdown Colliery (which Thomas the Tank Engine fans will love!) and browse more than 50 historic road vehicles and the vintage garage display.

The Scramble Experience at The Wing, at the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Fern brings history to life, with an incredible insight to what life was like for the pilots defending Britain’s skies in the summer of 1940 during the Second World War. At Crabble Corn Mill in River, Dover, you can explore one of the most complete and working examples of a Georgian watermill in Europe. This working museum, which once provided supplies for troops defending Britain from the threat of a Napoleonic invasion, sells flour ground on-site and hosts various events throughout the year.

Perhaps a rainy day makes you want to curl up and watch a great movie? For a unique and totally retro cinema experience, head to Sandwich and catch a film at the Empire, an original Art Deco cinema from the golden age of Hollywood. The Empire Cinema, which first opened its doors in 1937, has retained period features and holds movie screenings every day. Or head to the Silver Screen Cinema, a quaint and cosy independent cinema in the heart of Dover, where you can watch films including new releases throughout the week from as little as £3.50 per ticket!

The Astor Theatre in Deal stages regular performances, from theatre and dance to comedy and live music, as well as livestreams of National Theatre and Royal Ballet productions. You can forget about the weather outside and enjoy some cultural escapism! Lose yourself in the action onstage, in this fabulous community theatre in Deal town centre.

And, of course, it’s often easy to escape from a wet weather day by getting wet! Or perhaps, by working up a sweat? Our leisure centres across White Cliffs Country – which include Tides Leisure Centre in Deal, Dover District Leisure Centre and Sandwich Leisure Centre - have great facilities including swimming pools, state of the art gyms, squash courts, sauna and steam rooms, Clip n’ Climb and more.
