Half Day Tours (up to 5 hours)
Gateway to England
WWI themed walking tour of Folkestone including the Leas promenade, the recently opened Memorial Arch and the Harbour Arm from where soldiers left for the Western Front. After a stop at the poignant Battle of Britain Memorial in Capel-le-Ferne, we continue beyond Dover to St Margaret’s Bay, where Noel Coward and Ian Fleming both lived. This is the closest point to France, from where you may enjoy magnificent views of the famous White Cliffs, the English Channel and, on a clear day, the French coastline. To round the day off, we will take you for a traditional 'cream tea' in a typical English tearoom.
Drive to Sandwich, which is one of the most complete medieval towns in Britain and its street plan has little changed since the 14th century. After a short stop in Sandwich drive to Walmer Castle through Deal, a “limb port” of the Cinque Ports. Visit Walmer Castle, which is the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The Duke of Wellington, one of the most illustrious Wardens, left behind a collection of memorabilia and actually died here. The Castle historical gardens are outstanding.
Admire the views across the English Channel from the famous chalk cliffs of Dover before visiting what is the largest and finest example of a Norman Castle in Britain, and is often described as 'The Key to England'. Inside the Great Tower you can immerse yourself in a medieval palace like no other. Discover centuries of history from the Romans to the Cold War and delve deep within the cliffs to visit the Secret Wartime Tunnels which housed a military hospital in WWII.
