Irving Finkel - The First Ghosts at the Astor Theatre

A chance to join Irving Finkel, the Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian script, languages, and cultures in the Department of the Middle East in the British Museum, as he discusses his latest book, exploring the world's ghost literature to indicate the extraordinary age, longevity and vitality of the human conviction that the human spirit survives the demise of the body and, while properly content elsewhere out of sight, has always been prone to wreak mischief, to discomfit the living or to gain closure for themselves.

In The First Ghosts, he uncovers an extraordinarily rich seam of ancient spirit wisdom which has remained hidden for nearly 4000 years, covering practical details of how to live with ghosts, how to get rid of them, and how to avoid becoming bring one back if need be, as well as exploring more philosophical questions: what are ghosts, why does the idea of them remain so powerful despite the lack of concrete evidence, and what do they tell us about being human?
