From hospitals to 24-hour fuel stations, here's the essential information you may find helpful during your time in White Cliffs Country.

Medical services

For life-threatening emergencies call 999 or 112in a medical emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk.

For urgent, non-emergency medical assistance or advice, please call 111or visit www.111.nhs.uk  NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can ask for a translator if you need one. If you’re deaf and want to use the phone service, you can use the NHS 111 BSL service – visit www.interpreternow.co.uk/nhs111. You can also call 18001 111 on a textphone.

Hospitals

There are two Urgent Treatment Centres in the area - these are usually overseen by doctors (sometimes GPs) working with nurses. They can diagnose and deal with many of the common problems people go to A&E for. Use this facility if you need urgent medical attention, but it's not a life-threatening situation. These are things like:

  • sprains and strains
  • suspected broken bones
  • injuries, cuts and bruises
  • wound dressing
  • stomach pain
  • coughs, colds and breathing problems
  • vomiting and diarrhoea
  • skin infections and rashes
  • high temperature in children and adults
  • mental health concerns.

If a doctor decides you need a prescription, they can organise one for you. Emergency contraception is also available.

Doctors' surgeries 

Visiting NHS patients who need to see a doctor can get temporary registration (up to14 days) at any local surgery, but the surgery does not have to accept visitors unless it is an emergency. Non-NHS patients can be seen on a private basis but will be charged.

Dentists

If you need urgent treatment and do not have a dentist, or if you need to see a dentist out-of-hours, contact NHS 111.

Calling for help at sea

For emergency assistance call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. For emergencies at inland water spots, such as lakes and rivers, call 999 or 112 and ask for Fire and Rescue services.

We hope you won't need to call the Coastguard while you're here, but we're lucky to have two stations - at Dover and Walmer - with fantastic Lifeboat crews if you do.
