The Coastal Voice Trail

A ground-breaking art trail in Dover which transforms the town into an open air gallery via multimedia content inspired by the landscape and local people's stories.

Coastal Voice is an art trail with a difference, bringing music and art direct to your smart phone via cutting-edge technology.

The free-to-access trail, funded by the European Space Agency, uses GPS triggers and QR codes to instantly deliver multi-media experiences to mobile phones. Simply scan the QR code on posters located at key locations in Dover or step into a designated GPS zone and you will be able to access specially created multimedia content inspired by the landscape and local people's stories.

The trail uses content from The Coastal Voice Project, a year-long series of interviews, workshops and creative sessions in Dover, Grimsby and Sefton. Funded by the National Lottery, Coastal Voice aimed to capture the accent, identity and natural environment of these coastal towns and features interviews with people from Dover and artwork from local school children. The interviews were set to music in a full-length video opera, performed by musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and sections are included in the trail. Scroll to the bottom of this page to watch the video opera.

The pioneering project follows partnership work between Dover District Council, Music in Mind and Gazooky Studios

Rose Kay, CEO of Gazooky Studios: We’re delighted that our technology is being used for this groundbreaking project. This pioneering tech allows us to bring a new art form to life in Dover, making storytelling and cultural experiences easy to local and tourists to access right on their personal devices.

John McHugh, Artistic Director of Music in Mind: Coastal Voice has been a highly enriching project. We’ve worked with 900 people across the three areas and it’s really exciting to see the augmented reality experiences come to fruiting for the public to enjoy.
