Sandwich Quay is now home port for a unique maritime attraction – an 80-foot working patrol boat from the Cold War era, managed by the USN P22 Trust.

This perfectly preserved American naval patrol boat was built in 1952 at the height of the Cold War when Europe was in turmoil following the end of World War II. It was operated by the US Navy for six years before being handed over to German Army control in 1958 and proudly sailed the Rhine ensuring security was upheld at a difficult time. She is the only example still afloat of a fleet of 23 such ships that patrolled the River Rhine and has appeared in Hollywood films, including the 2017 blockbuster Dunkirk!

Static tours

Visitors can go below deck to truly understand the life of servicemen during those dark days, are often available, especially at weekends and do not require pre booking - please see the website or Facebook page to check when she is available to visit.

River tours

P22 is still a working boat and offers tours on the River Stour as often as possible depending on high tide times and when pre-booked passengers have secured their places on board. Please call for prices and availability. Group bookings are welcome. The sailing tour takes two hours and embarks from Sandwich quay towards Pegwell Bay passing the historic World War I port of Richborough where thousands of servicemen had their last view of England before leaving for France.

This now tranquil nature reserve is home to a large colony of seals and it is here the P22 stops so the visitors can enjoy the sight of these beautiful creatures, swimming basking fishing and playing in the water. On the return journey, the skipper often allows guest to helm the boat - an unforgettable experience.

Please contact the team to find out more and book a visit to this intriguing and historic boat.
