The Missing Project is a participatory project for women affected by the serious mental illness of a loved one.
Created by Deal Artist Deirdre Kashdan, the project continues to grow, and has more than 200 women participating nationwide.
In Victorian Hidden Mother Photography, mothers would be draped and obscured in the background whilst holding their child long enough for the image to be captured. Deirdre identified strongly with these images, having provided essential support for so many years, hidden not only from her loved one, but missing from the conversations had by medical and social services.
Since November 2023, she has been inviting other women to create their own portraits inspired by this photographic genre.
Mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, people have also contributed writing and illustrations to convey their sense of love, loss, grief and strength.
This award-winning project has already had a positive impact, helping to identify and strengthen an often-overlooked community. It also aims to reduce stigma and help raise awareness of the current inadequacy of provision of Mental Health Services.
This special evening will be a one off, and will include slides of the portraits, recitals, and live music from local, acclaimed musicians Poggy and Kotchin.
