Dover's underpass under Townwall Street (the dual carriageway to the port), which links the town centre and the seafront, has been transformed into a brilliant time tunnel.
While it is not a visitor attraction in the traditional sense, the underpass's refurb in late 2025 as part of town-centre improvements has created a colourful, bright, uplifting and inviting route. It is worth visiting to see and read about the town's incredible and fascinating history depicted in vibrant images and captions on the walls.
The underpass complements the multi-million-pound development of the Dover Beacon project alongside it and was designed by a team at Dover District Council. Its bold and creative design includes an array of information and pictures from a range of local organisations and individuals - a wonderful example of collaboration to showcase the town and offer a fascinating insight into Dover’s past. There's much more than meets the eye here.
Discover more about Dover's history at Dover Museum, which is a short walk from the underpass in the nearby Market Square.
