Ever wondered how fine lace was made? Well, now’s your chance to find out …
As part of the Lace Guild's Golden Anniversary, Cantium Lacemakers will be running demonstrations throughout this two-day event. See how it's done - and try for yourself.
2026 marks the Golden Anniversary of the Lace Guild, and South Foreland Lighthouse is delighted to be a part of their celebrations. For two days, local bobbin lacemaking group Cantium Lacemakers will be giving demonstrations of this centuries-old traditional craft that has now largely been replaced by machinery – so much so that hand bobbin lacemaking is now classed as an endangered craft.
You'll have the opportunity to watch skilled makers at work, learn about the history of lace and discover how this intricate craft is being kept alive today. Come and join the friendly group of lacemakers in the Marconi Hut; they'll be delighted to share their skills with you and help you try lacemaking yourself on their special practice pillows - with full instructions, of course!
This is a relaxing craft, based on easy-to-follow principles and, whether you're 9 or 90, you too could become one of tomorrow's lacemakers.
The tearoom, lighthouse and shop will be open from 11am to 5pm. Lacemaking demonstrations take place from 10.30am to 5pm.
This is a free event with no booking required. Normal admission charges apply for the venue. Supervised children are welcome. The weather can change rapidly on the cliffs, so please dress appropriately. We recommend stout shoes and trousers for the walk to the lighthouse.
There is no parking at South Foreland Lighthouse. You can park at the White Cliffs Visitor Centre (normal parking charges apply) and walk across the cliffs (approximately 50 minutes) or use the public car park in St Margaret’s Bay and walk up to the lighthouse. Please see the National Trust website for full details.
