A White Cliffs Walking Festival walk.
This short walk with Simon Bill, artist and author of DOVER (a collection of essays giving his personal perspective on this fascinating town) takes in a varied array of sites.
Meeting at St Martin’s Battery car park on South Military Road, you will look at the historic military structures there and take in the view across the Western Docks to The Channel, and (with obliging conditions) the French coast. Crossing the road to a wooded area you'll then look at the small unnamed caves in the chalk cliff (no need to enter if you are not comfortable).
Next, you'll follow the North Downs Way to The Drop Redoubt, circumnavigate its huge dry moat and descend the ‘64 Steps’ to Bill’s allotment at Pilot’s Meadow. Crossing the pathway, You'll explore picturesque Cowgate Cemetery and visit a few noted graves, then cross York Street (beneath which lies a Roman fort) to The Roman Painted House (which may or may not be open that day).
After visiting Dover Museum to view the Bronze Age boat, the world’s oldest surviving sea-going craft, you'll then follow Cannon Street to Biggin Street and finish at JB Sushi Bar for an early supper.
