Deal Castle, owned and managed by English Heritage, is a must-see on any trip to the seaside town of Deal. It is the most elaborate example of the revolutionary coastal artillery castles built by Henry VIII to defend England against a threatened invasion by European Catholic powers.

Deal was the middle, and largest, of the ‘three castles in the Downs’. The other two castles (see below) are within walking distance - Walmer Castle and Gardens home to the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and award-winning gardens, is a pleasant beachfront walk away and what remains of Sandown Castle, largely destroyed by coastal erosion, is now a volunteer-run community garden.

Explore the castle from the tunnels below to the battlements above and visit the exhibition to find out how Henry's turbulent reign shaped England's defences. With displays, children's activities and fascinating artefacts, the whole family can enjoy the rich and varied history of the castle.

Look out for the audio adventure posts that you can wind up and listen to as you explore the castle. Climb the spiral stairs to the ‘Captains of Deal’ display, and leave your mark in the graffiti room.

Deal Castle shop sells a selection of gifts and themed souvenirs. There’s also a second-hand bookshop in the castle.

Opening

The castle is open daily during peak season (May to September), Wednesdays to Sundays in spring (mid-February, March and April) and at weekends only in the winter (from November to mid-February).
