Come rain or shine, there are plenty of things to see and do during the school holiday this half term in the Dover, Deal and Sandwich area.

The first River Runner boat trip of the year is on Saturday 14 February, with further trips on Sunday 15, Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 February. Join the boat at Sandwich Quay, wrap up warm, bring hot drinks and enjoy a trip where you'll learn about the river's history, amazing wildlife and beautiful seal colony. Don’t worry about the weather - there is a roof and canopy to keep the rain off. Advance booking essential.

Wonderful Wingham Wildlife Park has a packed week of activities and there is always something amazing to see, including capybara babies, majestic tigers and giraffes, and you may be lucky enough to see the rare orangutan baby! There's an indoor play area for younger children if the weather is particularly rough. A very special pink guest is visiting on Monday 16 February (see below).

Wrap up warm and head outdoors to see the very early signs of spring. Visit Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory where you can follow paths around the site and watch birds from one of the hides on the reserves. Samphire Hoe at the base of the White Cliffs near Dover is also a great place to explore and there are drop in activities on Saturday 14 and 21 February.

Dover Transport Museum, packed with all forms of transport and fascinating displays, reopens after the winter on Sunday 15 February and again on Wednesday 18 and Sunday 22 February. See a large collection of vintage motorbikes, model railways, bygone street scenes and much more.

Explore Dover Castle's Great Tower, the Secret Wartime Tunnels, the seige-themed play area and the Roman lighthouse, one of the oldest buildings in the castle grounds. There's so much to see here for a jam-packed day out. The nearby Walmer Castle & Gardens is also a wonderful place to visit - spot spring flowers in the award-winning gardens, including lots of snowdrops, and see inside the Lord Warden's apartment. Buy tickets to both in advance online and save 15% (free entry to English Heritage members).

For children aged 5–11 who love the outdoors, Betteshanger Park's Forest School Holiday Club is packed with adventure from den building and woodland crafts to campfire cooking and tree climbing. A 7-hour day is £35 (activities & equipment included). They just need a packed lunch, drinks and snacks and to wear clothes you don't mind getting muddy.
